छह प्रगतिशील अमेरिकी सांसदों ने विदेश सचिव मार्को रुबियो को पत्र लिखकर भारत में छात्र विरोध प्रदर्शनों को लेकर अपनी चिंताएं उठाने का आग्रह किया है। उन्होंने खास तौर पर रुबियो से मुंबई में भारतीय विदेश मंत्री एस. जयशंकर के साथ इस मुद्दे पर चर्चा करने का अनुरोध किया है। पत्र में छात्र प्रदर्शनों के दौरान कथित तौर पर सुरक्षा बलों द्वारा अत्यधिक बल प्रयोग, मनमानी गिरफ्तारियों और अत्यधिक बल प्रयोग को लेकर चिंताएं जताई गई हैं। सांसदों ने नागरिक और राजनीतिक अधिकारों पर अंतरराष्ट्रीय संधियों का भी उल्लेख किया, जिसमें दोनों लोकतंत्रों के सभा और अभिव्यक्ति की स्वतंत्रता की रक्षा के दायित्व पर जोर दिया गया है।
