Drones Deployed to Detect Farm Fires Missed By Satellites

Times of India · environment

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) is deploying drones in Punjab to detect stubble burning in real-time, especially during evening hours when satellite detection is limited. Around 80-90 drones are planned for deployment this winter in identified farm-fire hotspots. This initiative aims to address a gap where some farmers burn crop residue later in the day to evade satellite monitoring. CAQM has also stressed continuous monitoring and enforcement measures throughout the harvest season to improve detection and ensure timely action against violations.
