Untreated Sleep Apnea May Harm Liver Health, Warns Doctor
HT - Lifestyle · lifestyle
Untreated sleep apnea, a condition causing breathing to stop and start during sleep, could pose risks to liver health, warns hemato-oncologist Dr Kasturi Baruah. Common symptoms like loud snoring and daytime tiredness may indicate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which can lead to inflammation and disrupt fat metabolism. Studies show 11% of Indian adults have OSA, while 38.6% suffer from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Reduced oxygen levels from OSA can impair the liver's ability to regulate blood sugar and lipids, potentially causing fat buildup and leading to conditions like MASLD.
