Servant Sacrifice Theory Revived After Skull Fractures Found In Ancient Egyptian Royal Cemetery
Times of India · science
New research re-examining skulls from Egypt's First Dynasty royal cemetery at Umm el-Qa’ab near Abydos suggests servants of early kings may have been sacrificed. Bioarchaeologist Roselyn Campbell studied 46 skulls excavated a century ago, finding 18 with injuries consistent with death around the time of burial. These findings support a long-standing theory by Egyptologist Flinders Petrie, though evidence remains incomplete. The injuries, often linear fractures, are more consistent with deliberate blows from flat objects than accidental falls or combat.
