Scientists Raise Seven Caveats on Mercury-to-Gold Claim

The Hindu - Science · science

A San Francisco-based company, Marathon Fusion, has claimed to have converted mercury into gold using nuclear fusion byproducts. They proposed a process where neutrons from fusion strike mercury-198, creating radioactive mercury-197 which decays into stable gold-197. Marathon scientists predicted this could yield 2 tonnes of gold annually per gigawatt of fusion power. However, the claim faces seven significant caveats, including that the process is nuclear transmutation, not fusion itself.
