Human Rights Watch has called on Zambian authorities to halt a post-election crackdown targeting the political opposition following President Hakainde Hichilema's victory in August elections. The rights group reported that opposition members, journalists, and lawyers have been arrested, disappeared, beaten, and threatened. HRW stated that this repression has created a chilling effect on civic and political organizations. The organization also noted the closure of courts, preventing legal challenges to the election results, and urged an investigation into abuses by security forces.
