Kolkata Minister Signals End For Horse-Drawn Carriages
Times of India · india
Kolkata's traditional horse-drawn carriages may soon be a thing of the past as the state government plans to replace them with battery-operated alternatives. Minister Agnimitra Paul stated that the horses suffer from being forced to run, and the government has discussed the transition with owners and animal rights groups like PETA. While animal welfare advocates support the move, citing benefits for horses and public health, horse carriage owners have vowed to resist the change. The city currently has 58 registered horses and 29 licensed carriages.
