India Faces Intensifying Power Shortage As States Seek Additional Electricity
Business Standard · business
India is experiencing an intensifying power shortage, with several states struggling to meet electricity demand, especially after sunset. The deficit reached its highest level since August 2023 in September 2026, driven by reduced hydropower, coal supply issues, and thermal plant maintenance. States like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh are seeking additional allocations from the Centre to avoid power cuts. Some states are resorting to expensive emergency purchases to bridge the supply gap amid sustained high demand.
