Bronze Age Children Buried Differently By Sex In Serbia, Study Finds

Times of India · science

Researchers studying 77 children from Bronze Age cemeteries in Serbia have found that burial positions often differed by biological sex, suggesting gender-linked funerary customs were observed during childhood about 4,000 years ago. The study analysed individuals from the Maros culture cemeteries at Mokrin and Ostojićevo, dating to between 2100 and 1550 BC. Unlike adults, children's sex was determined by analysing proteins preserved in ancient teeth, overcoming challenges with underdeveloped skeletons. Males typically lay on their left sides with heads north, while females rested on their right sides with heads south.
