Rajasthan HC: Multiple Cases Alone Don't Justify Police Surveillance

Times of India · india

The Rajasthan High Court has ruled that simply having multiple criminal cases registered against an individual is insufficient to justify continued police surveillance or the retention of a history sheet. Authorities must conduct a reasoned assessment, considering the allegations, case outcomes, and recency. Justice Sunil Beniwal directed the Udaipur SP to reconsider a history sheet opened against Naresh Prajapat, who faced 12 cases between 1996 and 2025 but had only one conviction nearly three decades ago. The court emphasized that while conviction isn't mandatory, reasonable grounds are required.
