A health seminar organised by the Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP) in Thrissur warned that insurance-driven healthcare is exploiting patients and weakening the public health system. Health economist V. Ramankutty alleged a nexus between insurance companies and private hospitals, leading to inadequate services and coverage. He called for stronger regulation of corporate players and increased government spending on public health, suggesting health cess and sin taxes for revenue. Speakers also cautioned against multinational corporations acquiring hospitals, which could escalate treatment costs.
