Spiders May Experience REM Sleep, Resembling Human Dreams

Times of India · science

Researchers studying Australian jumping spiders, Portia fimbriata, have found evidence of distinct sleep stages, including one that resembles REM sleep. This REM-like stage is characterized by eye movements and muscle twitches, observed using infrared cameras over several days and nights. The findings suggest that some sleep features might be shared across animals with significant evolutionary differences. This discovery raises new questions about the possibility of dream-like states occurring in invertebrates, challenging our understanding of sleep.
