The Arunachal Pradesh government is reportedly suppressing protests against a proposed 11,000 MW dam in the Siang Valley. Adum Tayom, a leader from the Upper Siang district, and three other activists were detained by police and remain in preventive custody. These activists are members of the Siang Indigenous Farmers’ Forum, which opposes the dam, fearing submergence of ancestral lands and displacement. Central security forces were deployed to the region last year, amid escalating tensions over the dam project.
