Times of India - Business · business

India's gold import duty hike from 6% to 15% has significantly increased unofficial supplies, with smuggling estimated at 50 tonnes in the September quarter, a stark rise from three tonnes a year prior. Despite record gold prices pressuring consumer demand, expenditure on gold increased by 3% year-on-year in the first nine months. Jewellery demand recovered sequentially but remained 20% lower than last year. This trend indicates consumers are spending more on gold but purchasing smaller quantities due to affordability challenges.
