Female Elephant Trapped in Slush at Erode Reservoir Dies Despite Rescue Efforts

A female wild elephant, estimated to be between 35 and 40 years old, has died after becoming trapped in slush at the Gunderipallam reservoir in Erode district. The elephant had gone to drink water when it got stuck due to receding water levels and slushy conditions. Forest Department and Fire and Rescue Services personnel worked to rescue the animal using an excavator and ropes. Despite receiving treatment and monitoring through the night, the elephant passed away in the early hours of Monday, October 12, 2026, before further operations could resume.
