Residents in western suburbs like Pattabiram and Thiruninravur are calling for regulation of spaces beneath flyovers and service lanes, which are heavily encroached upon by vendors. Motorists also complain about poor maintenance of rail overbridges. Encroachments have persisted for about 15 years, causing traffic bottlenecks and safety concerns due to poor lighting and lack of police presence. Consumer activist T. Sadagopan advocates for regulating these spaces for road users, suggesting greenery and art installations instead of illegal shops. The Highways Department has pledged to remove encroachments with local authorities.
