Greenland Shark Lives For Centuries, Matures Slowly

Greenland sharks are the longest-living vertebrates on Earth, with a lifespan estimated to be at least 272 years. These slow-moving creatures inhabit the cold Arctic waters and grow only one centimetre per year. They reach sexual maturity at around 150 years old, meaning sharks alive today were born centuries ago. Their incredibly slow metabolism and longevity make them unique subjects for scientific study.
