West Bengal May Relax Land Ceiling For Industry

West Bengal's government is considering a time-bound relaxation of land ceiling laws for industrial and critical projects, rather than repealing them entirely. Adviser to CM Adhikari, Subrata Gupta, stated that Section 14Y of the West Bengal Land Reforms Act, which limits family land ownership to 24 acres in rural areas, cannot be removed completely. He cited concerns about rampant land hoarding and Bengal's high population density as reasons for caution. The state also plans to incorporate compensation for bargadars and pattadars in its new land policy.
