RBI's Rupee Defence Squeezes Market Liquidity, Pushes Up Yields

Business Standard · business

The Reserve Bank of India's aggressive defence of the rupee has led to a rebound but at a significant cost, including dried-up liquidity and increased hedging expenses. Measures to curb speculative demand and steer oil company purchases away from the spot market have suppressed normal market absorption of currency shocks. Despite these interventions, fundamental drivers like high oil prices, sticky inflation, and capital outflows persist, leading to expectations of further rupee weakness. Bond yields have also surged to over a three-year high as markets anticipate more rate hikes.
