Austria's 1907 Gift of Chamois Now Threatens New Zealand's Alpine Flora

Hindustan Times · environment

In 1907, Austria's Emperor Franz Joseph I gifted chamois, mountain animals similar to goats, to New Zealand. These non-native animals have since spread throughout the South Island's mountain ranges. A 2008 study examined their diet, finding they consume fragile alpine vegetation like herbs and woody plants. Scientists also noted that chamois can be found in forests, impacting plant regeneration. The Department of Conservation manages them as pests, highlighting the unintended consequences of introduced species.
