3,106-Carat Cullinan Diamond Found in South Africa Now Part of Royal Sceptre

In 1905, Frederick Wells discovered the 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond at South Africa's Premier Mine. This remains the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever found. Its largest polished stone, the 530.2-carat Great Star of Africa, is now set in Britain's Sovereign's Sceptre with Cross. The Transvaal government presented the diamond to King Edward VII in 1907 to help mend relations after the South African Wars. The cutting process took eight months, involving three men working 14-hour days.
