Oil Geologist's Texas Land Becomes National Park

Wallace Pratt, a Texas oil geologist, first visited McKittrick Canyon in 1921 and was so impressed by its beauty that he purchased land there with partners for a private retreat. His initial land donation of 4,942 acres in 1959 formed the core of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, established in 1972. Pratt also built two homes in the canyon, including the unique "Ship on the Desert" modernist house designed to resemble an oil tanker. These contributions transformed a personal sanctuary into a protected natural area.
