The Karnataka cabinet has approved a plan to decentralize Bengaluru's policing by splitting the city's single police unit into five commissionerates: Central, East, West, North, and South. This restructuring aims to improve response times, crime control, law and order, and traffic management in the city of over 1.5 crore people. Each commissionerate will be headed by an IGP or DIG-rank officer, reporting to a newly upgraded Chief Commissioner of Police. The plan includes the appointment of 1,022 new personnel, with the remaining staffing needs to be met through redeployment.
