Scientists at the University of Konstanz in Germany have discovered a novel enzyme that breaks down plastic, resembling the video game character Pac-Man. Found in soil bacteria, this enzyme attaches to the bacterial surface, allowing it to degrade plastic. Intriguingly, the enzyme can also break down penicillin, an antibiotic, suggesting a potential link between plastic degradation and antibiotic resistance. This discovery indicates that microorganisms may be evolving to consume plastic faster than anticipated, offering a potential avenue for tackling plastic pollution, though it is not yet a complete solution.
