Small-Scale Fisheries Threaten Ray Populations In Tamil Nadu

Mongabay India · environment

A decade-long study in Tamil Nadu has revealed a significant decline in manta and devil ray populations, with fewer adult rays being caught. The proportion of adult spinetail devil rays in landings dropped from 64% to 26% over the study period. Rays reproduce slowly, making population recovery challenging after the loss of breeding adults. Although international trade is restricted under CITES Appendix I, these rules do not cover domestic catches. Small-scale fisheries are a major global threat, with India contributing significantly to mobulid deaths.
