Invasive Mesquite Tree Threatens East Africa's Grazing Lands And Native Vegetation
Hindustan Times · environment
Introduced to East Africa in the 1970s and 1980s to combat erosion and fuelwood shortages, mesquite trees have become an invasive threat. Their rapid growth aggressively displaces native vegetation and reduces vital grazing areas for livestock. Beyond ecological damage, mesquite pollen causes respiratory allergies in humans, with studies showing high positive reactions in affected populations. The tree's thorns also pose a health risk, leading to hospitalizations and even amputations in some regions, while its sap may support mosquito populations.
