Supreme Court Dismisses Andhra Pradesh Govt's Plea On Backward Class Quota

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed an appeal by the Andhra Pradesh government challenging a high court order that struck down two government orders providing 34% reservation for backward classes in local body elections. The apex court stated that the Andhra Pradesh High Court's order was reasonable. Previously, the high court had invalidated the government orders, citing they violated Supreme Court guidelines limiting total reservation to 50%. The high court had mandated the election process to commence within six weeks.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने शुक्रवार को आंध्र प्रदेश सरकार की एक अपील खारिज कर दी। यह अपील हाई कोर्ट के उस आदेश को चुनौती दे रही थी जिसने स्थानीय निकाय चुनावों में पिछड़ा वर्ग के लिए 34% आरक्षण देने वाले दो सरकारी आदेशों को रद्द कर दिया था। सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने कहा कि आंध्र प्रदेश हाई कोर्ट का आदेश उचित था। पहले, हाई कोर्ट ने सरकारी आदेशों को अमान्य कर दिया था, यह कहते हुए कि वे सुप्रीम कोर्ट के उन दिशानिर्देशों का उल्लंघन करते हैं जो कुल आरक्षण को 50% तक सीमित करते हैं। हाई कोर्ट ने छह सप्ताह के भीतर चुनाव प्रक्रिया शुरू करने का आदेश दिया था।
