NASA Fungus Samples Grew During Artemis I Moon Mission

Hindustan Times · science

Twenty fungus samples, including black mold and three mutants, successfully grew during NASA's 25-day Artemis I mission around the Moon. Scientists from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory sent the fungi to study their ability to cope with deep space conditions and radiation. The experiment aimed to understand how living organisms withstand the harsh environment beyond Earth's magnetic shield. All samples showed significant growth, with DNA repair mutants exhibiting higher biomass than the wild type. The mission's success criteria were rated as 'Excellent' upon return.
