Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Rail Project to Create 10,000-Tree Fruit and Honey Belt

Times of India · environment

The 125-km Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail project is set to develop a unique floral corridor in the hills, featuring approximately 10,000 fruit-bearing trees. These trees will be planted on reclaimed land using muck excavated from tunnel construction, aiming to boost horticulture and afforestation. The initiative also focuses on groundwater recharge and creating livelihood opportunities through beekeeping and nursery management. Various fruit species suitable for different altitudes, along with ornamental and aromatic plants, will be planted to support biodiversity and local economies. Decentralised nurseries and poly-houses are planned to establish the 'honey belt'.
