The Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Thekkady, Kerala, is introducing compressed natural gas (CNG) buses to reduce pollution within the protected area. This initiative marks the first time a Kerala Forest department tourism centre has adopted CNG buses for passenger transit, replacing older diesel vehicles. The eco-friendly fleet was procured with support from BPCL Kochi Refinery's CSR fund, amounting to ₹88.37 lakh. The long-term objective is to transition the entire transit fleet to clean energy, operating exclusively pollution-free vehicles inside the reserve.
