Bangladesh's Mango Diplomacy With India Reaches Its Limits
Al Jazeera · world
Bangladesh has used cultural diplomacy, including gifts of mangoes and textiles, to maintain ties with India following the 2024 uprising that toppled Sheikh Hasina's government. These soft power gestures aimed to keep diplomatic channels open and prevent further estrangement. However, the approach has proven insufficient to resolve core political issues, such as disputes over shared river waters or rebuilding political trust. A 2025 shipment of 1,000 kg of Haribhanga mangoes to Indian leaders, intended to signal a desire for normal ties, did not address the underlying political problems.
