A 49-year-old Brazilian man sold all his belongings and traveled over 1,200 miles to meet his online girlfriend, only to discover she was an artificial intelligence-generated character. Edimar Martins believed he had found his life partner in Jessica Oliveira after seeing her profile in 2020. He sold his possessions on October 9 to fund his bus journey to Belo Horizonte, arriving on October 11. His hopes were dashed when he couldn't find her and was informed by a radio station that she didn't exist.
