Mine By-Product Ochre Stabilises Contaminated Chester Site For Apartments
Times of India · environment
A derelict lead works site in Chester is being prepared for 126 new apartments using ochre, a by-product from mine water treatment. The 5,200 square metre site, historically contaminated with lead and asbestos, will have its soil stabilised by mixing in the iron-rich ochre. This process binds contaminants, allowing safe on-site management instead of excavation. The Mining Remediation Authority previously used this method for arsenic-contaminated soils during the Mersey Gateway project. This approach supports circular economy principles, reducing waste and carbon emissions.
