Kochi's Built-Up Area Surges 48% in 20 Years, Wetlands Shrink

Times of India · environment

Kochi Corporation's built-up area has increased by 48% from 42.86 sq km to 63.26 sq km between 2004 and 2024, according to a joint study. This rapid urbanisation, particularly in areas like North Paravoor and Kalamassery, is causing a decline in coastal wetlands and vegetation. The study projects a 100% growth in built-up area by 2054, increasing risks of urban heat, waterlogging, pollution, and coastal erosion. Experts warn that current urbanisation practices are unsustainable, leading to ecosystem degradation and increased vulnerability to natural disasters.
