Supreme Court Upholds Madras HC Order, Invalidates TN Govt Order on Reservation
The Hindu · india
The Supreme Court has upheld the Madras High Court's judgment, invalidating a Tamil Nadu Government Order dated March 9, 2024. This order had aimed to allow individuals converting to Islam from Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes, Denotified Communities, and Scheduled Castes to obtain Backward Class Muslim certificates. These certificates would have granted access to the state's 3.5% reservation quota for BC Muslims. The court's decision clarifies that conversion does not automatically transfer a person to a different notified community, emphasizing the need for evidence-based inquiry into continuing social disadvantage.
