India Invites Worldsteel to Open Office, Cautions Against Carbon Tariffs

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has invited the World Steel Association to establish an office in India, recognizing the country's growing role in global steel demand and production. She addressed the Worldsteel general assembly, highlighting India's position as a key driver of incremental global steel demand. Sitharaman also cautioned that unilateral measures like the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism will not solve the issue of global steel surplus. She advocated for a coordinated approach to decarbonization and addressing structural imbalances in the industry.

वित्त मंत्री निर्मला सीतारमण ने World Steel Association को भारत में दफ्तर खोलने का न्योता दिया है। उन्होंने कहा कि वैश्विक स्टील की मांग और उत्पादन में देश की भूमिका बढ़ रही है। उन्होंने Worldsteel की आम सभा को संबोधित करते हुए कहा कि भारत वैश्विक स्टील की मांग में बढ़ोतरी का एक अहम जरिया है। सीतारमण ने यह भी चेतावनी दी कि यूरोपीय संघ के कार्बन बॉर्डर एडजस्टमेंट मैकेनिज्म जैसे एकतरफा उपाय वैश्विक स्टील की अधिकता की समस्या का समाधान नहीं करेंगे। उन्होंने डीकार्बोनाइजेशन और उद्योग में संरचनात्मक असंतुलन को दूर करने के लिए एक समन्वित दृष्टिकोण की वकालत की।
