Govt Admits Hospitals Overcharge Patients, Cites Malpractice to Supreme Court
Times of India · health
The Indian government has acknowledged before the Supreme Court that hospitals engage in the malpractice of overcharging patients for medicines and consumables. In an affidavit, the government stated that patients have a significantly low bargaining position with hospitals, leading to various exploitative practices. Despite India having competitive drug manufacturing with low prices, patients face inflated costs due to information and bargaining asymmetries. Hospitals reportedly charge margins from 170% to 700% on cancer drugs and even higher on consumables, often selling at MRP.
