Leptospirosis has been confirmed as a fatal infection in southern sea otters, marking the first documented deaths from the disease in the threatened marine mammal. The same bacterial serogroup responsible for these otter deaths has also been found in California sea lions. This discovery adds to a growing coastal mystery surrounding the spread of this bacterial illness.
