Former CJI Chandrachud Too Deferential to Govt: Ex-Judge Kaul

Times of India · politics

Former Supreme Court judge Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul has claimed in his upcoming book that former CJI D Y Chandrachud was excessively deferential to the government regarding judicial appointments. Justice Kaul alleged that Chandrachud, possibly under government pressure, withdrew a case from him concerning the questioning of PMLA provisions. He also stated that Chandrachud asked if he should contact the government for pre-approval on collegium picks, a practice Kaul found troubling. Chandrachud, however, stated that all collegium decisions for Supreme Court appointments were unanimous and without dissent.
