Puerto Rican Student Turns Plantain Peels into Mulch, Reducing Weed Growth by 53%

Times of India · science

A seventh-grade student from Puerto Rico has developed an innovative bioplastic mulch from discarded plantain peels. Wileidy Enid Feliciano-Rivera created EcoMusa, which significantly reduced weed growth by up to 53% in a four-week experiment. Her project, recognized as a finalist in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, also helped maintain cooler and moister soil conditions compared to uncovered ground. This sustainable alternative shows promise for agricultural applications, addressing concerns about plastic use.
