Supreme Court Questions UPI MDR Charges

The Supreme Court has questioned the government's decision to levy a 0.4% charge on merchants for UPI person-to-merchant transactions exceeding ₹2,000. A bench refused an interim stay on the charge, which is set to be introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India. The court asked about the nature of this charge, with one judge noting it was neither a tax nor a fee. The petition challenges the constitutional validity of the amended Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007.

शुल्क पर सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने सरकार से सवाल पूछे

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने सरकार के उस फैसले पर सवाल उठाए हैं जिसमें 2,000 रुपये से ज़्यादा के UPI पर्सन-टू-मर्चेंट ट्रांज़ैक्शन पर व्यापारियों से 0.4% शुल्क लेने की बात कही गई है। एक बेंच ने इस शुल्क पर अंतरिम रोक लगाने से इनकार कर दिया, जिसे National Payments Corporation of India द्वारा लागू किया जाना है। कोर्ट ने इस शुल्क की प्रकृति के बारे में पूछा, और एक जज ने कहा कि यह न तो टैक्स है और न ही कोई फीस। यह याचिका Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 में किए गए संशोधन की संवैधानिक वैधता को चुनौती देती है।
