Karnataka Govt Proposes Three-Year Ban On New Private PU Colleges Amidst High Vacancies
Times of India · education
Karnataka's government plans to halt the establishment of new private Pre-University (PU) colleges for three academic years due to a significant 54% seat vacancy. The state currently has 6,416 PU colleges with 16.8 lakh seats, but only 7.8 lakh students enrolled, leaving 9 lakh seats unfilled. Officials cite surplus capacity and the yearly addition of nearly 100 new colleges as reasons for the proposed moratorium. Private college associations intend to oppose the move, arguing for regulation over a blanket ban and highlighting the quality provided by private institutions.
