World Timekeepers May Scrap Leap Second By 2035

Global timekeepers are meeting near Paris to decide whether to eliminate the "leap second," a practice of adding an extra second to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) to keep it synchronised with Earth's rotation. Since 1972, 27 leap seconds have been added, with the last in 2016. However, these additions cause significant complications for financial markets and data centres, leading to issues like system crashes. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures voted in 2022 to scrap the leap second by 2035, potentially decoupling our clocks from Earth's natural rotation.
