Bald Ibises Return To Europe After 400 Years

Scientists have successfully reintroduced the northern bald ibis to Europe, establishing its first self-sustaining colony in 400 years. The species, extinct in Central Europe by the 17th century due to hunting, was taught migration routes using microlight aircraft. Young ibises followed the aircraft to wintering grounds in Italy, and by 2011, they began returning independently. This innovative conservation effort by the Waldrappteam has brought the species back to the Alps.
