Six United States lawmakers have urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to raise concerns about alleged police excesses against protesters in India. The protesters were demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and the suspension of electoral roll revisions. Rubio is scheduled to visit Mumbai and Jamnagar between October 19 and 22, with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar set to meet him on October 20. The lawmakers emphasized the obligation of the US and India, as the world's largest democracies, to defend human rights.
