New 401(k) System Cuts Retirement Cash-Outs, But Few Funds Reach New Plans

Hindustan Times · business

A new portability system for 401(k) retirement savings has significantly reduced the number of workers cashing out their accounts when switching jobs. Research shows that for those with balances under $1,000, cash-outs dropped from about 50% to 9% within 10 months. For balances between $1,000 and $7,000, cash-outs fell from 39% to 31%. However, the system has struggled to transfer these funds into workers' new employer plans, with only 6% of transferred accounts successfully reaching their destination.
