गुजरात के गांधीनगर जिले की एक अदालत ने गोहत्या के मामले में तीन लोगों को कड़ी उम्रकैद की सज़ा सुनाई है। जज ने 76 पन्नों के अपने फैसले में मनुस्मृति और अन्य हिंदू धर्मग्रंथों का हवाला दिया, जिसमें गायों के धार्मिक महत्व पर ज़ोर दिया गया। कोर्ट ने कहा कि अगर ऐसे क्रूरता करने वालों को सज़ा नहीं मिली तो गायें विलुप्त हो सकती हैं। गुजरात में गोहत्या के खिलाफ सख्त कानून हैं, जिसके तहत 2017 से इस कृत्य के लिए उम्रकैद के साथ-साथ संबंधित अपराधों के लिए भारी जुर्माना भी अनिवार्य है।
