US Guidance Halts Harvard Law Externships For Foreign Students

Hindustan Times · education

New US federal guidance has led Harvard Law School to stop authorizing international Juris Doctor students for its 13 externship clinics for the 2026-27 academic year. This change, stemming from US Department of Homeland Security guidance on Curricular Practical Training (CPT), could limit practical experience opportunities for foreign students. Previously, externships were an option to fulfill experiential learning requirements, but they are no longer considered mandatory for all students. Affected students may explore pre-completion Optional Practical Training, though this could reduce post-graduation work authorization time.

US Department of Homeland Security
