Japan has formally protested Russia's request to extradite ICC President Tomoko Akane, a Japanese national, from the Netherlands. Japan's deputy chief cabinet secretary called the move "unacceptable" and "unjust," stating that measures targeting ICC individuals are regrettable. Russia issued extradition requests for Akane and nine other ICC staff members following the ICC's arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Japan reaffirmed its consistent support for the ICC, despite balancing this with its close ties to the United States, which has also sanctioned Akane and other ICC officials.
