The Income Tax Department has uncovered significant tax evasion by restaurants, estimating the total evasion to be over Rs 25,000 crore. Analysis of data from Swiggy and Zomato alone suggests Rs 7,500 crore evasion from 8,000 restaurants that have not filed returns despite TDS deductions. Over four years, from 2021-22 to 2024-25, the government collected approximately Rs 75 crore in TDS, with the number of such restaurants increasing by 65%.
